These two types of cover are relatively new innovations to the market. 'Critical illness' or 'dread disease' cover provides a lump sum to the policyholder on the diagnosis of particular illnesses, such as heart attack, stroke, cancer. 'Long term care' provides cover for the cost of caring for elderly persons. A claim is normally paid when the individual is unable to carry out a number of daily activities.
